 Капиталовложения иностранных лиц или компаний в национальную экономику. Они могут иметь форму прямых капиталовложений в производственные предприятия или вложений в финансовые инструменты (financial instruments), например в портфели ценных бумаг или в акции. Обычно страны, принимающие иностранные инвестиции, относятся к ним двойственно. С одной стороны, приветствуется создание рабочих мест и увеличение богатства, но, с другой, часто наблюдается отрицательное отношение, связанное с опасениями “покупки страны иностранцами”. К иностранным инвестициям часто относятся неодобрительно и в стране, представители которой вкладывают средства за ее рубежами, особенно если в ней существует безработица. Тем не менее значение иностранных инвестиций в современном мире неуклонно возрастает.

Все виды вложения имущественных или интеллектуальных ценностей иностранными инвесторами, а также зарубежными филиалами российских юридических лиц в объекты предпринимательской и иной деятельности на территории России с целью получения последующего дохода. Подразделяются на прямые (долгосрочные, способные оказывать стратегическое влияние на инвестируемые предприятия) и портфельные — обычно представляющие собой покупку незначительной доли акций того или иного предприятия (менее 10%) и скорее преследующие спекулятивные цели.
